3. Zine

I don’t have a problem with zines or the people who make them (“zinesters,” I believe they are called). I just feel like the word “zine” is a slippery slope to calling graphic novels Gra-Nos and children’s books Chi-Bos. But then again, the word has been around for a while, so maybe I’m just being zine-o-phobic. (Heyo.)

2. Unputdownable

This word reminds me of that Kraft commercial in which they use the word “crumbelieveable.” This also reminds me of the time someone told me they loved me, and I replied by saying that they were crumbelievable. That led to a week in the doghouse. Anyway, don’t use “unputdownable” on a book blurb. It’s bad business.

1. Chapbook

Whenever someone asks me to read or buy their chapbook, I’m always met by a initial pang of queasiness. The word just brings to mind the image of the author in fingerless gloves, writing by candlelight in a dark, Dickensian alley. I’m always open to reading your chapbook, but just don’t call it a chapbook, okay?
